As like the English Alphabetic letters, that are used for making words and sentences.  Hindi Varnmala is also called the Hindi Alphabets (Aksharmala) which is used for making words, sentences, phrases. In Hindi Varnmala, there are around 52 Hindi letters (Aksharas) that are used in making Hindi sentences. The script in which the Hindi language we write is also called the Devanagari Script.

In the Hindi Language, the letters in Hindi Alphabet are subdivided into two different types, these two types are called “Swar” and “Vyanjan” respectively. According to the Department of Official Language, Government of India, there are 12 swars’ and 37 vyanjans’. But by the source of ancient Hindi Language, there are around 13 swars’ and 33 vyanjans’ respectively.

Hindi Swars (Hindi Vowels)

In the Hindi Language, the letters (Akshar) that we can pronounce without stopping the breath, throat, and palate are called “Swars”. Or the letters that we can speak or use independently are called “Swars” (vowels). ‘ऋ’ is used as a ‘swar’ (vowel), but nowadays in Hindi language, it is also pronounced as ‘री’. 

  • As per the traditional Hindi Language, there are around 13 swars’ (vowels) respectively.

  1. There are only 10 Swars on the basis of pronunciation. We also call it an Independent Swars.

  1. ‘Dependent Swars’ are the form of letter and Punctuations, which we can do with any other Vyanjans.

Hindi Vyanjan (Consonants in Hindi)

While pronouncing the letters in the Hindi alphabet, the sound that comes out of breath, throat, and palate, etc., is called ‘Vyanjan’ (consonant). Each consonant is spoken with the help of vowels (swars’). Every consonant is pronounced with an ‘A’ vowel. A consonant cannot be pronounced without the vowel ‘A’. There are a total of 37 Vyanjans (consonants) in the Hindi alphabet.
